Subterranean biomass of Quercus coccifera L. shrublands in eastern Spain
Abstract
Subterranean biomass of kermes oak (Quercus coccifera L.) shrublands has been studied by controlled excavation of 24 m2 of eight experimental areas located in Valencia, eastern Spain. The age of the aboveground component of the ecosystem was estimated using the date of the last fire. Total belowground biomass ranged from 34 to 81 t/ha D.M. (average 53 t/ha). Most subterranean biomass was located in the uppermost 15 - 30 cm of the soil. Ths distribution area of belowground biomass always exceeded that of the aboveground biomass. The average dry weight root/shoot (R/S) ratio ranged from 2.61 to 4.73 (average 3.5). These figures are higher than those of other Mediterranean ecosystems.Downloads
