Elemental cycling in a Eucalyptus globulus plantation of SW Spain
Abstract
Since 1980, uninterrupted research have been carried out in some Eucalyptus plantations in Huelva. The objectives of this work were to analyze the main features of the Soil-Tree-Atmosphere interaction in order to answer some salient questions about the hydrological regime and nutrient cycling. Some analysis of unpublished data, related to intrasystem cycling, are show here. Data refers to measurements of amounts, increments and fluxes of biomass and major elements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) of the following compartments: - Overstory (Trees forming the main canopy) Including separated information on: Leaves, fruits and flowers, branches (bark and wood), bole (bark and wood), standing dead, etc. - Soil top organic. - Total roots. - Rooting zone. The analysis is aimed to describe and characterize: - Nutrient allocation in Eucalyptus - Above-graound nutrient return from vegetation. - Increment of biomass compartments. - Mass balance of the plantation nutrient cycle. - Atmospheric input of nutrient. - Annual elemental uptake, requirement and recycling interval.
