Chemical control of Platypus sulcatus Chapuis (Coleoptera: Platypodidae) on poplars
Abstract
This preliminary work was carried out in order to found alternative insecticides to control the wood borer that damages the plantations of poplars in the Delta of the Parana River during 2 years. The following treatments were applied by direct spray to the trunks: chlorpyrifos (127,5 cm3 a.i./hl, EC), lambdacyhalothrin (1,67 cm3 a.i./hl, EC), phenthoate (150 cm3 a.i./hl, EC), carbaryl (425 gr a.i./hl, WP), cypermethrin (5 cm3 a.i./hl, EC) and control without insecticides. Effectiveness was calculated applying the formula of Sun-Shepard and data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey test. Lambdacyhalothrin, chlorpyrifos, carbaryl and cypermethrin, were effective for the control of P. sulcatus. They should be sprayed when most of the adults of P. sulcatus carry out flights of couple and host search during the spring and this coincides with the presence of perforations in the bark of the trees surrounded by the characteristic sawdust of the attack of the adults, conformed by longitudinal particles. When the rain overcome the historical averages, the cypermethrin showed some variability. Phenthoate was not effective in the control of this pest, but we have only one year of data. It is needed to make more studies for getting certain results.Downloads
