Genetic conservation of Populus sp. in Spain
Abstract
The main objectives of the Populus nigra L EUFORGEN network is the establishment of new methodologies for in situ and ex situ conservation. Different activities developed by the State Administration, as well as the Regional Administrations, stress the increasing interest for genetic conservation of autochthonous Populus species. Activities on conservation have usually been focused on installation and maintenance of in situ collections for natives species: P. nigra, P alba and P. tremula. However, recent works have been focused to study genetic diversity in both collections and natural populations, as a necessary tool to define a suitable methodology for genetic resources management. In this paper, the state of the inventories and collections for genetic conservation purposes is summarised, and a review of different studies on genetic diversity characterisation is presented. The identification of research needs and different strategies, taking into account the special importance of Spanish populations, is necessary for the long-term conservation of diversity in the distributional range of these species.
